Radiator Not Heating Up? 7 Common Causes and How to Fix Them

A cold radiator in winter is frustrating and uncomfortable. Before calling a heating engineer, try these DIY fixes for the most common radiator problems.

Quick Diagnosis: Where Is Your Radiator Cold?

SymptomLikely Cause
Cold at top, warm at bottomAir trapped in radiator
Cold at bottom, warm at topSludge build-up
Completely cold (one radiator)TRV stuck closed or blockage
All radiators coldBoiler or system issue
Cold in middleSludge or incorrect size

7 Common Causes and Fixes

1. Air Trapped in Radiator (Cold at Top)

Symptoms: Radiator warm at bottom, cold at top

The Fix: Bleed Your Radiator

  1. Turn off your heating and let it cool
  2. Place a cloth and container under the bleed valve
  3. Insert radiator key and turn anti-clockwise (quarter turn)
  4. Wait for hissing air to stop and water to appear
  5. Close the valve quickly
  6. Check boiler pressure (top up if below 1 bar)
  7. Turn heating back on

Time needed: 5-10 minutes per radiator

2. Thermostatic Valve (TRV) Stuck

Symptoms: One radiator cold when others are hot

The Fix: Free the Stuck Pin

  1. Remove the TRV head (usually unscrews)
  2. Find the metal pin underneath
  3. The pin should move up and down freely
  4. If stuck, gently tap with pliers or apply WD-40
  5. Push pin up and down several times
  6. Replace TRV head
  7. Turn heating on to test

Time needed: 10-15 minutes

3. Sludge Build-up (Cold at Bottom)

Symptoms: Radiator warm at top, cold at bottom

Why It Happens: Rust and debris settle at the bottom of radiators over time, blocking water flow.

The Fix:

  • Short-term: Remove radiator and flush with hose
  • Long-term: System powerflush (professional service)
  • Add inhibitor after flushing to prevent recurrence

Professional powerflush cost: £350-£500

4. Lockshield Valve Closed

Symptoms: One radiator cold, others working

The Fix:

  1. Find the lockshield valve (opposite end to TRV, has a cap)
  2. Remove the cap
  3. Turn valve anti-clockwise to open
  4. Adjust until radiator heats evenly

Note: Lockshields are set during installation to balance the system. If you adjust them, you may need to rebalance.

5. Diverter Valve Fault (Combi Boilers)

Symptoms: Heating works OR hot water works, not both

What's Happening: The diverter valve that switches between heating and hot water is stuck.

The Fix: This requires a Gas Safe engineer. Diverter valve replacement costs £200-£350.

6. Low System Pressure

Symptoms: All radiators lukewarm, boiler pressure below 1 bar

The Fix: Repressurise Your Boiler

  1. Find the filling loop (braided hose, usually under boiler)
  2. Open both valves slowly
  3. Watch the pressure gauge
  4. Stop at 1-1.5 bar
  5. Close both valves
  6. Reset boiler if needed

If pressure drops repeatedly, you may have a leak - call an engineer.

7. Radiator Not Balanced

Symptoms: Radiators nearest boiler hot, furthest cold

What's Happening: Water takes the easiest path, so close radiators get most flow.

The Fix: Balance Your Radiators This requires adjusting lockshield valves systematically. It's best done with a professional or by following detailed guides.

When to Call a Professional

DIY won't fix:

  • Complete system failure
  • Repeated pressure loss (indicates leak)
  • Strange noises from boiler
  • Multiple radiators cold
  • Radiator leaks
  • Gas-related issues

Professional costs:

ServiceTypical Cost
Radiator flush£100-£150
Full system powerflush£350-£500
Radiator replacement£180-£300
TRV replacement£80-£120
Heating system diagnosis£60-£85

Prevention Tips

  1. Bleed radiators annually - Before winter heating season
  2. Add inhibitor - Protects against sludge and corrosion
  3. Annual boiler service - Includes system checks
  4. Don't hang washing on radiators - Blocks heat output
  5. Consider powerflush - Every 5-6 years for older systems
